Overview

When researching artworks in architecture, jewelry, and manuscript illumination (which is fittingly called “tezhib” in Turkish, meaning decoration by gold), a hierarchy emerges among three important elements.

I. Calligraphy:
First is the calligraphy, used to inscribe the word of God and thus taking the top priority.

II. Geometry:
The second is the underlying geometrical pattern, usually based on the 4, 5, or 6-pointed stars.

III. Biomorphs:
The third place is reserved for the floral designs, also referred to as “biomorphs” or “arabesque,” and which adhere to the geometry at its most basic level.

* For this project, we will be focusing on two of the three, namely the calligraphy and the biomorphs.

I. Calligraphy

In regards to the calligraphy, the same style as that of the cap (the Thuluth qalam) is used in order to remain consistent.

But then, if the names of the fragrances are listed on each cap, what words should be put on the bottle of each fragrance?

A good idea is to draw inspiration from the notes of the scent itself. In the case of Lamar, the pyramid is as follows:

  1. Top Notes: Bergamot, coriander, cardamom, and orange.
  2. Heart Notes: Jasmine, rose, marigold (also known as tagette), magnolia, and saffron.
  3. Base Notes: Ambroxan, cedarwood, moss, and toffee.

An interesting approach would be to find a way to visually represent how the scent’s three layers of the top, heart, and base notes are structured.

The scent itself is visually represented by Kajal Perfume’s logo, and is at the center of the art from which everything else emanates.

The top notes comprise the first wave:

فيه برتقال وبرغموت وكزبرة وحبهان
In Lamar there is orange, bergamot, coriander, and cardamom;

The beauty of their scent is the talk of the people.

The middle notes are the next wave:

ومخملية ومغنولية وورد وياسمين وزعفران
And marigold, magnolia, rose, jasmine and saffron;

And marigold, magnolia, rose, jasmine and saffron;

A splendid scent that stealthily comes forth after a long regression.

Finally, the base notes are the final wave to come forth:

وحلوى توفي وخشب أرز وحزازية وأمبروكسان
And toffee, cedarwood, moss, and ambroxan;

And toffee, cedarwood, moss, and ambroxan;

A steady base that lasts until after dawn.

II. Biomorphs

Since the sides of the bottle are not squares, any pattern based on the square (which is the base for any 8-pointed star pattern) will not work.

This means that the underlying geometric pattern that the floral design will conform to must be customized.

Moreover, matching the size of the calligraphy on the top of the cap will result in a specifically-sized circle.

The biomorphs must fit perfectly within the space around the calligraphy, and must not cross the safe area for metallization.

Since the biomorph designs are based on spirals that conform to a given area that can be mirrored, the space is divided into four equal parts.

After conducting a thorough research on existing biomorph designs in order to find the visual logic that would enable us to customize it for this specific area, several spirals are designed to fill up the quadrant.

The typical motifs that are usually associated with biomorphs, including variations of leaves, are researched and designed with different levels of detail.

In addition to stems and leaves, biomorphs can also include flowers.

It therefore makes sense to use some of the floral notes within the design, specifically the marigold, magnolia, rose, and jasmine flowers.

The elements are then integrated, and the area is mirrored.

The design is present on on all sides except the front, which has the name of the perfume instead of the calligraphy.

The result is a bottle that is as striking as the cap before it. The overall design feels at home with other pieces of Arabic and Islamic artwork, particularly the exquisite Moroccan arabesque lamps that create dazzling shadows on the surrounding walls.
